About the Business Transfer Program
Mission: The mission of the BCC Business Transfer Program is to create an exciting learning environment where high standards are set for students; innovative curriculum and great faculty creates high retention and high achievement; all students are welcome, diversity is valued and inclusion is the norm; and our graduates excel in further studies and their careers.
Our
Program
What we are
o The Business Transfer Program allows students to attain a two-year Associate in Business and transfer to state public universities to complete a bachelors degree in business.
o The program has 1000 majors completing the first two years of a four-year business degree, an estimated 200 to 400 students considering the major.
o We are the largest Business Transfer Program in the state and we transfer the largest number of students to the University of Washington Business School (ranked in the top 20 in the country).
o We have over 20 faculty including eight certified accountants and seven lawyers, some who have won awards and all who have extensive industry experience.
Access
o Business core courses including Accounting 210, 220, 230, Law (GBUS 202 and BA 200) and Statistics (BA 240) are offered every quarter.
o We have a dual enrollment program with the University of Washington, Bothell where students are admitted to the UW Bothell Business School but complete their first two years at BCC.
o Students also have the option of completing their four-year management degree from Eastern Washington University right on our campus.
o We offer all our courses online and along with Washington State University make accessible an online business degree.
o We have an email listserv that keeps students informed of important deadlines and upcoming events.
o We have a tutoring center manned by volunteer students that provides support to students in accounting and statistics.
Innovation and
Excellence
o
Our
program gives many of the experiences of a four-year business school. We have developed
a multicultural consulting course
(ETHN 241) that gives our students invaluable experience
working with a real business and mentored by industry professionals from the
Bellevue Rotary or large corporations. This course has been commended by the Washington
state legislature and won a national award.
o We are working with colleges in China to develop joint programs for Chinese and US students to learn together. We already have signed a sister agreement with Shanghai Business School, a college with over 11,000 students and 6 campuses.
o Along with our corporate sponsor, The Boeing Company, we offer the biennial Connect to (create hyperlink to Connect to Your Future page) Your Future student career conference that informs over 1600 students about high-demand careers.
o Financial Education at BCC, a program to spread objective financial education throughout the state of Washington has reached over 3000 people, was featured in the Seattle Times and was commended by Governor Gregoire as a model for the nation.
o The Business Leadership Club (link) mounts many events to help students learn about careers including an accounting job shadow, speakers from Starbucks, Costco, venture capital firms and student entrepreneurs. Every year we hold over 12 events attended by 800 students.
Success
o Close to 250 students graduate from our program each year. Our alumni have transferred to the University of Washington (Seattle. Bothell and Tacoma), Seattle University, Western Washington University, Central Washington University, Stanford, Columbia, University of Arizona, University of Nevada Las Vegas, University of Southern California, University of Hawaii, and others.
o Our students have positions of responsibility at Boeing, KPMG, Alaska Air, Weyerhauser, Washington Mutual, Microsoft, Deloitte, prominent small businesses and more. They form our extensive alumni network that continues to provide advice and mentoring to our students.
o In 2007 over 120 of our alum graduated from the University of Washington (all campuses) including the winner of the University of Washington Bothell Chancellor’s award: Jayne Collins.

Faculty
We have five full-time faculty in our program who are committed to our students, our program and each other. Dr. Judy Woo has spearheaded the active recruiting of the most highly-qualified and diverse faculty. Our faculty includes eight certified accountants and seven JDs. All our faculty have significant industry experience. Of the twenty faculty who currently teach in our program, ten (50%) are faculty of color.
Staff Support
Janice Grayson, the Business Academic Advisor, conducts a phenomenal 1500 academic advising appointments in a year. She is supported by our capable administrative staff of Deanna Tiplin, Glenda Coma and Evelyn Kasama, who are totally knowledgeable in jumpstarting the advising process. Janice also maintains the Business Division website which provides invaluable information on our program and transfer requirements. She also created a business listserv which informs our students of pressing deadlines, speakers, internships and events. (To subscribe, send a message to lyris@list.bcc.ctc.edu and write SUBSCRIBE bccbusiness in the body of your email.) Through Janice's efforts, we have forged strong relationships with all the major four-year business schools which regularly come on campus to provide our students with important information that get them to the front of the pack in the admissions process.
Student Support
Rich Bratz manages the statistics and accounting tutoring center, including recruiting the mainly volunteer students who serve as tutors. The tutoring center is housed right outside full-time faculty offices in A255 and gives students open access to faculty whenever they are available. We know that contact with faculty outside of class time is important to student engagement and our faculty is fully committed to helping all our students. Additionally, the tutoring center has become a meeting place for our student teams, supports our online courses, and encourages students to study together--all best practices to student success.
Student Engagement
Judith Paquette, 2007 Margin of Excellence winner, is the lead faculty advisor of our Business Leadership Learning Community, a extensive network of current students, alumni in four-year institutions such as UW and Seattle U, and alumni successfully launched in their careers. We know that the future of our students depends not just on academic advising but on contact with practicing professionals who can give invaluable advice on career advancement and who can open up vistas that our students have never considered. This is especially important for students who do not come from privileged backgrounds or backgrounds where they were exposed to businesses. The Business Leadership Learning Community is another opportunity to foster student engagement. Every year the student leaders of the BLC mount an incredible program that bring prominent business executives on campus, include field trips to companies such as Costco where our students met executives, shadowing at accounting firms, and social events. We are extremely proud of our student leaders many who have stepped up to running for student government positions at BCC and UW.
Innovative Curriculum
The recent transfer memorandum from the University of Washington stresses the importance of relevant experience in the admissions process. The Business Transfer program through Leslie Lum has been in the forefront of innovative curriculum to give our students relevant experiential learning. In conjunction with Ethnic Studies, we have developed an integrated course where students can participate in a significant learning experience (Multicultural Entrepreneurship and Consulting GBUS/ETHN 241) that partners with the Small Business Development Center, other educational institutions for curriculum development (UWBS Seattle and Bothell, and City University), industry for mentorship (the Bellevue Rotary Club, Frank Russell, Port of Seattle, and The Boeing Company have provided mentors for the student teams), and economic development entities (City of Bellevue, King County, and the Port of Seattle). Leslie works closely with professors at the University of Washington's Business and Economic Center (BEDC) in which technical assistance is given to women- and minority-owned businesses and metrics are tracked.
This course is one of the core services offered by the Bellevue Entrepreneur Center of which our program was a founding member. BCC students have provided over 15,000 consulting hours with a market value of over $500,000 to businesses and organizations such as Asia Pacific Language School, Academic Edge (woman-owned), Milt's BBQ (African American owned) and the Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. This contributed to the total economic impact of over $10 million provided by the Bellevue Entrepreneur Center. Of the businesses in this program, revenues increased over 50%. This course won a national award in service learning and was commended by the Washington State Legislature as a contributor to small business development. It was cited as a model program in the Prosperity Partnership's New and Small Business Support Initiative, on of the six Foundation Initiatives proposed to drive economic prosperity in our region. For more information on this course, click here.
Faculty mentorship has played a major role in the success of our alumni and these examples are a case in point. Our student tutors (who represent our most engaged students) have been particularly diligent in maintaining contact with faculty who continue to mentor them past their time at BCC. Faculty mentors student tutors by using their network of connections to arrange internships and other activities that assist in career development. Our students have taken full advantage of these opportunities and used them as stepping stones to achievement. They have also been very generous in mentoring the students who follow behind them.

2007 Chancellor's Medalist at UWB is BCC Business Transfer alumna Jayne Collins.
Shortly after beginning her studies in June 2005, Jayne was diagnosed with breast cancer and her life took a drastic turn. She was forced to leave school and endure chemotherapy and surgery in order to take care of her illness. Upon her return in January 2006, an anxious Jayne was ready to resume her full-time schedule, but regaining her health was a priority so Jayne had to reduce her workload for a few quarters due to ongoing treatment. Jayne is the first in her family to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a 3.73 GPA. (from UW Bothell Graduation Program).
Jayne's Wisdom Tips for BCC Students:
Don't let life's strugglers get in the way of your education: It's never too late to go to school. I started at BCC when I was 41 and graduated from UW Bothell with honors at 46.
Realize that career goals may change over time! Company layoffs, etc. medical problems (such as breast cancer) and other life issues will change the direction you head in. Be ready for change--it's the only constant in life.
Make time to volunteer--it will change your outlook on life and make you a better person, plus it will expand your circle of friends.
Our
alumni have transferred to the University of Washington (Seattle and Bothell),
Seattle University, Western Washington University, Central Washington
University, Eastern Washington, Stanford, Columbia, University of Arizona,
University of Nevada Las Vegas, USC, and others. Our current contingent of graduating
students has committed to creating student blogs at UW-Seattle, UW-Bothell and
Columbia University to let our students know how life will change when they
reach their four-year institutions and other helpful advice for success. Our
alumni include Angel Kelchev who went on to Stanford with a Jack Kent Cooke
Scholarship, but we are equally proud of all our alumni including the
