Personal Tidbits

• Born and raised in Seattle, Washington.
  
• Worked way through college as a swimming instructor.
  
• Lived in Switzerland for a year, teaching English in an international school,
  L’ecole Benedict.
  
• Went around the world twice.
  
• Married to a Norwegian met crossing the North Sea on a storm tossed ship,
  going from Oslo, Norway, to Newcastle, England.
  
• Been to Norway eight times; speaks Norwegian (but has an American accent.)
  
• Sings love songs in Russian (grandparents were Ukrainian).
  
• Composes and writes words for piano compositions.
  
• Draws animal pictures, using pastel chalk and colored pencils.

  and been kissed by a seal.

• Husband, Finn Christiansen, is an electrical engineer who develops state of
  the art radios and medical instruments.
• Husband breeds African Cichlids ( a tropical fish from Lakes Malawi and
  Tanganyika) and has an 800 gallon fish tank he can scuba dive in.
• Son, Gregg Grabill, does management recruitment in LA, specializing in
  environmental cleanup.
• Brother, Bill Yeager, is a professional trombonist, teaching at San Diego
  State University (Bill has played with Les Brown and Louie Bellson’s All
  Stars among others and has cut a number of CD’s.)
• Sister, Pat Goldsberry, was the former owner of the Seattle Marine Aquarium
  and has lived in the SanJuans, the Bahamas, and now on Hoods Canal.

Late 60’s to early 70’s

• First elected chair of Bellevue Community College’s English Dept.
• Researched and implemented the change from a 3 to a 5 credit writing program.
• Helped develop an English program with the most extensive literature offerings
  in our state’s community college system.
• Taught a series of interdisciplinary classes with the music and art departments
  over a four year period using both historical and thematic approaches.
• Team taught Drama as Literature with Bonnie Wallace Hoffman’s Drama Class
  enacting scenes from the plays discussed.
• Team taught American Literature with Black Literature.
• Created seven videos retrievable on individual TV sets programmed to receive
  them in our library and with voice only retrievable on any touch tone phone.
  (All this was programmed through our original library computer who was named "Chester."
• Used audio tapes to help students create compositions and to give responses and evaluations to them.
• Taught a year in an international school, L’ecole Benedict, in Montana-
  Vermala, Switzerland.
• Collected materials to develop a European Lit. Class
  

Late 70’s to early 80’s

• Wrote the English composition text, From Inside Out. Cambridge,
  Mass.: Winthrop Publishers, 1978.
• Pioneered the use of a process approach to writing, using student rather
  than professional writing models.
• Presented papers at the College Communications and Composition Conferences
  in Washington DC, Dallas, Texas, and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
• Gave over nineteen workshops locally, regionally, and nationally on the
  following topics: Writing Across Disciplines, Right Brain/Left Brain Teaching Techniques, Group Approaches to Teaching Composition, Multi Sensory
  Approaches to Teaching Literature, Building a Successful Literature Program, Techniques for Increasing Students’ Involvement in Literature Classes;
  Overcoming Writer’s Block, How to Write a Paper When You Really Don’t
  Want to, Creating Video Tapes to Supplement Class Content, 1984 and
  Other Negative Utopias, E.B. White’s "Door" as a Mirror of Humanity,
  Creating an Interdisciplinary Class on Sex and Gender, Research Findings
  on Class Size, Creating an Multimedia Program for Composition Classes.
• Published poems in literary magazines ‘79, ‘80, ‘81, ‘82.
• College coordinator for Washington’s Community College Humanities
  Project, funding research and development in the Humanities.
• One of founding members of the League of Humanities, combining
  resources from colleges in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada,
  Arizona, and Alaska.

Late 80’s to the 90’s

• Created Powerpoint presentations for literature classes.Created an interactive
  multimedia computer program on CD ROM for use in composition classes
  with the help of Brian Heiden, Media technician.
• Collected student feedback on responses to multimedia program in various
  levels of classes ranging from developmental English composition to second
  year lit. classes.
• Demonstrated use of self created Multi media and Powerpoint programs to
  the Great Teachers Seminar in Oregon, BCC’s Arts and Humanities Division
  Retreat, overall BCC campus during orientation week, and BCC’s Foundation
  Board and Board of Trustee Members.Created the English Homepage with the
  the Web development/technical assistance of Joe Kihara Munugu.
• Gave guest lectures at AAWCJC, Phi Theta Kappa, College Survival Courses,
  and the Pemco Ins. Co.’s Community Guest Lecturer Series.
• Wrote and acted in the play, "BCC Fantasia," coordinating 50 faculty,
  administration, and staff actors for Ray Jensen’s Sculpture Fundraiser.
• Turned the one act play "A Dopey Fairy Tale" into a musical, composing
  six original songs and two word parodies to existing songs, creating a
  fairy tale world where enchanted frogs harmonize, dogs do a howling
  imitation of Johnny Cash, and sad princesses burst into the "PMS Blues."
  This farce was produced by BCC’s Drama Dept. to standing room only
  audiences.
• Composed some 35 songs for piano. Two songs were performed in BCC’s
  Fall and Spring Choral Concerts.
• Taught interdisciplinary classes on "Existential Heroes" and "Sex and Gender."

Award for outstanding teaching.
